Most tabletop gamers, especially game masters, have considered polishing their RPG material and publishing it in some form. It would be a dream come true: who wouldn’t want to be a published author and make a few bucks from their hobby? However, the business aspect of self-publishing turns off a lot of aspiring authors. 2010 Game Industry Survey By Purple Pawn

Here’s a very interesting survey on the tabletop gaming industry: What I take from this survey: the tabletop gaming industry is doing ok. Best-sellers: I enjoyed the best-seller section of the survey results (pages 12-14). Roleplaying games are represented mostly by D&D and Pathfinder. The top selling product seems to be Magic: The Gathering. The big box stores did not answer the survey, so classic games, like Monopoly, are absent from the results. Definitely worth a look. Gamer Lifestyle Goal Setting for 2011 (Part Two)

This entry is part 2 of 2 in the series Gamer Lifestyle Goal Setting

In my last post I talked about the importance of setting goals for achieving your Gamer Lifestyle dreams in 2011, discussed the criteria that I assign to goals (they have to be measurable and they have to be flexible), and then reviewed the goals I had set for 2010 to see what had gone well and what had gone poorly.

Why freelancers struggle financially

Johnn and I had a conversation triggered by this article: Freelancers make 25k – 30k. Someone at the Yahoo RPG Freelance group jested that all freelancers are in the same underpaid boat.

To me, it’s proof that if you just look for work without working on your personal brand/name/portfolio, you’re coming out of every job with nothing more than you had coming in. It’s a recipe for disaster. Freelancers work for themselves. A freelancer spending 100% of his work … Continue reading →

Staying in the Zone

My post earlier this week dealt with finding your personal writing zone, that time of day (or night) when you are the most productive and prolific.  But that’s only one part of the issue.  If there’s one thing I’ve discovered over the last several years as a full-time writer, it’s that we’re constantly bombarded by distractions that threaten to derail our writing goals.  When we’re in the zone, we need to stay in the zone.  Here are a few suggestions … Continue reading →
