GenCon for the aspiring professional

Jess Hartley wrote a series of articles: GenCon for the aspiring professional.

My take on GenCon networking

It can work. But you have to network the right way. A great first step is to read Jess’ articles. And here’s my advice for the RPG GenCon networker:

1. Know your goal(s)

It’s hard to justify the trip to Indianapolis or measure its success if you don’t have an objective to start with.

2. Be professional (don’t be a fanboy)

When you meet your favorite game designer exchange pleasantries like you would with any other new acquaintance. Be straightforward in your business. Don’t hog their time. And if you feel an overwhelming urge to gush about how awesome they are, do it the smart way.

Don’t say “Man, I love your work. You’re awesome.”

Do say “I liked what you did with [technical aspect of game] – it really improved my game sessions and the fun everyone has at the table.”

3. Party with the right people

Never show uninvited to a party. But if you can get an invite, discussing in a relaxed atmosphere helps build relationships and makes deals happen. Why do you think businessmen play golf together?

4. Play 1 game per day

It’s a gaming convention! Play a little bit, but don’t let gaming get in the way of your gaming career. (Thanks to Micah from ObsidianPortal.com for that bit of wisdom)
